Why I Chose Rackspace For My Summer Internship

George ZhangFinding an internship as a college student can get crazy. In between the frantic scramble of handing out dozens of resumes and the repeated reciting of the same sales pitch, it is prudent to stop and wonder whether you are getting a job for the sake of getting a job or if you are getting a job because you legitimately want to work somewhere. Fortunately for me, getting an internship at Rackspace was the latter.

Among all of the booths I visited during Virginia Tech’s massive career fair, Rackspace truly stood out as a unique company. Most companies like to focus on what they do and what they are looking for. While this is certainly important, there are many other critical factors that need to be taken into account when finding a job (besides pay). One of these factors is company culture. Their poster at the career fair had one phrase written on it which I believe flawlessly sums up the Rackspace experience: “We are a ping-pong company with a technology problem.”

Think about that for a second. We are a ping-pong company with a technology problem. What does that mean? It means that Rackspace is a company that isn’t afraid to incorporate fun into the work day. It means that the work environment is more casual, so you can wear comfortable clothes in the searing heat of summer. It means that Rackspace cares for the well-being of its employees. And most importantly, when it comes to the Blacksburg office, it means that you get free food and drinks whenever you want.

Having fun and enjoying an internship is just as crucial as work experience and learning new things. Rackspace has all of these things plus a company culture that is second to none. That is why I joined Rackspace and never looked back.
