Summer Fun in Blacksburg

Floating The River in BlacksburgLast August I moved to Blacksburg and was able to catch the tail end of Summer. Now that Spring is here and the weather is getting warmer, I am planning all of my summer activities. I can’t wait to spend a full summer here in Blacksburg… and that’s saying a lot coming from a beach girl!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the area, the mountains here are breathtaking. I often find myself driving to work and thinking how lucky I am to have such incredible views; and that’s just on the highway!

Picture floating in an inner tube on the river with mountains surrounding you, the sound of trains rolling by in the hills, and views of the falls as you are carried down the river. On days when I want to do a little more than relax on a man-made lazy river, there are also the options to kayak or go white water rafting.

Burgandy BlacksburgI could go on and on about the various things to do around Blacksburg and the surrounding New River Valley area. Instead, I’ve picked my top 5 picks for this Summer to share.

There is something for everyone in Blacksburg!

Wine:

There are tons of wineries in Virginia with gorgeous views, but a good one that is close by is Chateau Morrisette. Not only are the views great but the wine is too. Also, it is dog friendly; they have great live music, and they are located right off of Blue Ridge Parkway.

We really are fortunate in Blacksburg to have so many weekend activities and places to explore in this beautiful area!

  1. Nice piece Meghan! I too am a recent San Antonio to “Racksburg” transplant.. and I too am LOVING IT here and all the nice outdoor and rich cultural events! Don’t get me wrong.. San Antonio is a great place (awesome/diverse food, people, activities).. but I’m a Yankee and just couldn’t take the TX heat! My wife and I are raising a family and Racksburg is the perfect mix of climate, out-door/family activities, and educational excellence for raising a young family. That, plus the culture here at Racksburg reminds me much of the early days of Rackspace (circa 1999), back when we were just a baby startup (I’m Racker #11).

It’s nice working for a company that allows (and HELPS) it’s people relocate to any of their remote offices (San Fransisco, Blacksburg VA, Atlanta GA, London, Beijing (yes China!), etc). Pretty cool if you ask me. This really reflects one of our company’s core values.. that we always strive to treat other Rackers as we would “Friends and Family”. It’s not just a pithy slogan. It’s reality. And that’s pretty cool.
