We are fast approaching Fiesta in Good ol’ San Antonio. For those who have not heard of Fiesta, it’s basically a week long party. Downtown San Antonio literally shuts down for the week to allow everyone to celebrate Family, Friends, Food, and (ahem) a few tasty beverages if you desire
“Fiesta really is one of America’s truly great festivals. It began as a way to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. That commemoration still takes place. But over the past century and more, Fiesta has grown into a celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultures. 2011 marks Fiesta’s 120th anniversary.” – quoted from http://www.fiesta-sa.org/about-2/
Many of the people from our team are locals to San Antonio and they really enjoy getting into the celebrations. This is an exciting time of the year as the weather is beautiful (currently 88 degrees and breezy), the grass is green, trees and flowers are blooming, and San Antonio just begins to really come alive!
Last week, we had a celebration of our own to help kick off Fiesta for our group. Rackspace did not sponsor the Fiesta event for our team; one of our Rackers, Mike Hernandez, took it upon himself to arrange a “Fiesta Day.”
Everyone in the Cloud Apps area dressed in colorful attire, most had sombreros, many had ponchos, and we had Tejano music playing in the background.
We had a potluck with so many amazing dishes, including tamales, chili, guacamole, bunuelos, queso, fried mushrooms, fried chicken, grapes, pickles, fritos, jalapeno bread, rice, beans, cucumbers with chili, paletas, and much more. OK – so it’s not all traditional Tex-Mex food, but that’s perfectly acceptable by us. We are a little weird.
I think that the engagement of our Rackers, in large part, should come from the Rackers themselves. Anyone can make a difference.
Mike is passionate about Fiesta and spent some time raising awareness around his Fiesta Day. While we work well together everyday, times like this really help us let loose and get to know each other a little more. There is a general vibe of happiness and laughter in our area. The team is having a great time.
Fiesta Day was a BIG SUCCESS and we all look forward to the real Fiesta this week!

It is really refreshing to see that a company team is actually a TEAM. I wish I could get in on that!
