Big Red Flag

Bryan CarterWow, 5 years!

I never would have expected to be this passionate and engaged after this long with a company.  Let’s face it – most of us grew up watching our parents come home tired from a long day and complaining about their jobs, or watching movies and TV shows depicting a brutal cutthroat environment in the workplace

I know I had always dreamed that things would be better for me… somehow.

Well, fast-forward to today and I can proudly say that I come home happy every single day.  Sure there’s those days that wear me out – that’s the nature of our business.  It’s a fast-paced, high stakes roller coaster around here. That’s the difference though. We hear things in the business world like “having the right people on the bus” but who cares? Buses are boring.  Rackspace is a roller coaster in a world full of buses. We need to have the thrill seekers that want to move at the speed of light.

5 Year Racker FlagSo, what does this have to do with my 5-year flag?  Quite a bit.

I was always in trouble in school and bored in my past jobs mostly due to not being challenged.  I’d do my best to fit in and act happy, but the thrill of the environment was never there – no passion, no creativity, no challenge… boring.

At Rackspace we are challenged daily and it keeps me and my team engaged – always searching for the next big obstacle to overcome.  Interestingly, our bosses aren’t always the ones pushing us to innovate… quite often we’re pushed harder by our colleagues. It isn’t uncommon to hear someone in the break room talking to someone else from a completely different department saying “you know, it would be cool if we handled things this way” or “you should really look into creating a product that does <insert really cool feature here->.”  Those conversations usually end with “Awesome! I will certainly look into it!”  Even better… ideas turn into action.

We might work in completely different groups, have completely different goals, but somehow we manage to push each other to create awesomeness. That’s how we do it at the Rack! :-)

I am grateful for the past five years.  The people I work with are the best in the business.  The team I lead inspires me to do better both professionally and personally.  The accomplishments I have made for myself here are great, but the collective accomplishments of my teammates move mountains.

Thank you Rackspace for allowing me to help build the world’s greatest company.

  1. I hope my son will be happy there. He said it looked like the job was right up his alley. He likes the way you treat your customers. His dad said the same thing about the company he works for now and he is happy there.
