Rackers

Almost 4 Years at Rackspace

Kirit Sagoo Wearing Many HatsI think about the day I started at Rackspace and the action packed years since… it’s uncommon to be in an organisation for 4 years these days and, at some point, not to have considered new opportunities… but really, it’s been an amazing ride, so why would I want to?

OK; so no company is absolutely perfect. My experience at Rackspace has been like a roller coaster; it’s been a fantastic ride naturally interspersed with a few humps.  So almost 4 years on, why am I still here?

The truth is that Rackspace offers what is truly important to me, not just as an employee and in my career, but as an individual.  Rackspace’s values align with my own – they include integrity, delivering on promises, straight talking, commitment, and ownership. All in all, doing whatever one can everyday to touch someone and help make their life easier in some, often simple, way.  Here, we don’t do this just for our customers; we do this for each other with a humanness, which I believe is generally lacking in the corporate world today.

This may sound corny, but I walk around the office and every day I see individuals all around that are special.  Many of my colleagues have flags above their desks, representing their origins from various parts of the world. Each with their unique qualities, some of which have been awarded a Rackspace ‘Fanatics’ staff award.

I was born and bred in Kenya, am of Indian descent and now live in the UK.  I like to think I bring a unique blend of characteristics myself!  Rackspace has continuously embraced and fostered my strengths as an individual, and is an organisation that has challenged and empowered me to make a positive impact where I can.

I enjoy working with fellow ‘Rackers’ (a term we use to refer to Rackspace employees), as they are individuals rather than just employees.  They work in an environment where they can be themselves and where people are naturally driven to exceed expectations as the norm… it really is a privilege to work with these Rackers every day.

There are always great things going on here.  Just the other day, I signed up to participate in  ‘Racky Races’. A charitable event, where Rackers are sponsored for taking on the challenge of driving a very old car across 1,100 miles, this year the destination is Barcelona!  Some Rackers are discussing cycling from our London office to Amsterdam and back in August (unfortunately I’m not fit enough for this just yet!).

In one week we celebrated winning the Sunday Time’s ‘Top IT company’ award and invited local school children to spend the day with us to learn what it’s like working in IT.

The list could go on!

My point is that it’s never a boring day here and that everyone is given the opportunity to get involved should they choose to!  This is part of what makes Rackspace a special place to be.
