Last month, the Channel Team volunteered for Fiesta Especial at Morgan’s Wonderland. We wanted to start 2011 out right and what better way than to have a team building event aimed at giving back to a great cause! We chose Fiesta Especial, which is an official Fiesta San Antonio event created for children and adults with physical, cognitive and developmental differences and the family and friends who love and care for them. It was a fun event to do as a team and an even better way to kick off Fiesta 2011!
We had about 27 Channel Rackers at Morgan’s Wonderland and there were another dozen Racker Volunteers lending a hand at the event. In total, there were 4,500 attendees playing games, riding the train, and eating yummy Fiesta foods – of these, 2,000 were special needs children from local schools who got the morning off for a fun Fiesta Field Trip.
In addition to the fun rides and simulation activities, one of the favorite game booths had a highly coveted goldfish prize that all the kids wanted. After playing a ping pong ball toss game, their winning ticket let them pick whichever goldfish their heart desired! Rackers were “fishing” and helping the kids pick out their new pet!
Whether we were picking up trash, taking toy prizes booth to booth for game winners, fishing for gold fish, or serving food, the Channel Team’s first group volunteer activity was a huge success! Seeing the kids’ faces light up when they won a game or riding the train was truly priceless. This was the first year Fiesta Especial was held at Morgan’s Wonderland and I think it’s the perfect place for it. Hopefully we can make this event a volunteer tradition for the Channel Team and maybe even have our own game booth next year!
Viva Fiesta!
